FYS 012 Photography and Race in America

We will consider the connections between photography and race through photographic case studies. From 19th century photographs of salves to recent images of police brutality against people of color, students will learn how to examine each image from multiple vantage points. "Reading" photographs will make students aware of the nature of photography: its subjective, historical, and theoretical implications and how those affect our lives. Assignments include analytic essays, film screenings, field trips, and photographic exercises.
