Program Description
This is a program leading to certification as a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant and is designed for the experienced teacher who wants to advance to a position on a Child Study Team. Its purpose is to prepare competent, capable, completely prepared professional Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultants to effectively function in a variety of settings diagnosing, assessing, and remediating individuals who require special services. The program’s design includes specific competencies presented sequentially in light of the background and experience of the professional entering the program.
The process is self-reflective, integrating past experiences and knowledge with current practices, while determining skills for the future professional. Ethical considerations for clients as well as the value of each individual are highlighted. This program meets the standards of the NJ Department of Education Services.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the University’s Admission requirements:
- Baccalaureate degree and Master’s degree from an accredited College or University
- Official transcripts form all institution attended
- Minimum 3 years teaching experience with valid New Jersey teaching certificate. A letter from the candidate's school administrator must be provided on letterhead documenting teaching experience.
- Submit a writing sample 1-2 pages in length which details reason to pursue this certification and future goals
- Professional Resume/CV
- Departmental interview may be required
- TOEF (for applicants whose native language is not English)
Transfer Credits
- Two courses from another institution of higher learning may be accepted provided credits are within six years (6) of previous graduate work.
- Course work descriptions must be submitted with application.
- Acceptance is pending review of courses and submission of official transcripts to the program coordinator.
Kean University Credits
- Courses previously taken at Kean may be accepted if they fall within the 6 year limit of previous graduate work.
- Acceptance is pending review of courses by coordinator.
