SCI 222 Ecology of the Five Boroughs

This course investigates the ecology of NYC and its boroughs. Students will discover the natural and man-made ecology of the five boroughs and the surrounding waterways by performing field studies at various locations. Students will be collecting pH, temperature, salinity, nitrate levels, dissolved oxygen and bacterial data on the river and creeks around Manhattan Island, Staten Island, and Long Island. Fieldwork is required. Students will use collected field data to assist them in performing a Habitat Assessment for an area of their choice including Upland Forest, Maritime Beach, Dune, Grassland and Shrubland, Freshwater Swamp or Meadow, Salt Marsh, Streams, etc.
