ITEC1140 Data Center Safety

This course provides foundational safety knowledge and hands-on skills required for personnel working in data center environments. Students will explore best practices for physical safety, proper handling of equipment, electrical hazard awareness, and correct usage of tools, ladders, and server lift operations. Emphasis is placed on preventing injury, maintaining equipment integrity, and ensuring safe operations within mission-critical spaces. The course is aligned with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety standards and 10-hour OSHA card for general industry.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify electrical hazards found in a data center
Identify fire suppression solutions for data centers
Demonstrate safe lifting of data center equipment
Demonstrate the correct use of tools for tasks performed within a data center

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
