CCDS1150 Career Exploration

This course provides students with an overview of career pathways across various industries.  Through interactive activities, guest speakers, and career assessments, students will explore their interests, skills, personalities, and values in relation to careers.  The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their educational and career goals.  Career research introduced in the class includes perusing career database information, informational interviewing, job shadowing, and participating in real-world exploration opportunities (e.g. volunteering).

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Demonstrate understanding of career and life planning theories
Assess personal interests, skills, personalities and values related to career choices
Research information about career and educational options using online career database with wage and employment outlook information
Utilize experiential learning activities like informational interviewing, job shadowing, and volunteering to further crystalize career pathway
Create a written career and educational action plan aligned with individual goals
Develop a contingency plan focusing on resiliency should life circumstances (job loss, change of goals, etc.) present itself

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
