2026-2027 Catalog

Interior Architecture and Design Associate of Applied Science

Program Description

This program is for students pursuing an AAS Degree in Interior Architecture and Design in preparation for the workforce. Through project-based learning, students explore the phases of the design and construction process, theory, and spatial organization, while developing the core skills needed to create safe, functional, and beautiful interior environments. As they progress, students examine diverse and increasingly complex interior project scopes, including building codes, sustainability accessibility, product knowledge, cost estimating, and essential life‑safety considerations. Throughout the program, students build technical competencies to communicate design intent for interior projects using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. They produce detailed project documents and develop creative presentation skills, gaining the training needed for entry-level roles in the design industry. Career opportunities may include roles in architectural design offices, lighting design studios, architectural drafting, design‑build firms, showroom environments, and roles as manufacturer’s representatives. Successful completion of the Interior Architecture and Design AAS degree, along with the Kitchen and Bath Certificate (60 credit hours of IND/AEC/CAD between the AAS and Certificate), meets the minimum 60 credit hours of educational requirements to sit for the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) exam, an essential step toward becoming a professional interior designer. What You Will Learn

Upon completion of the program, you will be able to:
1. Communicate historical and contemporary trends in the built environment and convey these concepts through the conceptual, schematic, and detailed development of interior spaces.
2. Interpret industry specific working drawings and construction documents.
3. Develop technical drawings and specifications for commercial and residential interiors, and for kitchen, and bath projects.
4. Create various reflected ceiling plans that clearly communicate lighting, switching, and interior architectural design intent.
5. Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to support sustainable project outcomes.
6. Apply design development processes to both small and large scale interior projects.
7. Develop, prepare, and present interior design projects using 3D modeling and visualization software.
8. Design and develop preliminary budgets for small residential projects.
9. Demonstrate professional business protocol in interactions with clients, peers, industry partners, and administrative teams.
