Completion of Study and Expiration of I-20

An F-1 international student is granted an additional 60- day period from their program completion date or end day of OPT to transfer to another institution or depart from the United States or apply for OPT (if eligible and not currently completing OPT). Status changes must be applied for before either the completion of study/OPT or the expiration of the I-20. Students whose I-20 expires without completing their program are considered out of status and must leave the country immediately.
