SPT 4270 EVENT AND VENUE MANAGEMENT

Sport facilities and events shape the experience of fans and participants. Event and venue management is a vital part of the sport industry. This course is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in planning, operations, systems, inclusive compliance, environmental sustainability, risk management and other issues confronting sport organizations today. This is an Academic-Service-Learning designated course incorporating hands-on learning experiences in civic engagement, organizational leadership, and administration of a high quality event.

 

This is a Service-Learning designated class that will work closely with a student selected, community, non-profit agency.  The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement describes Service Learning Classes as a “ . . . . . . credit-bearing experiential education approach that involves an established community partnership guided by the expertise of professors and community-based practitioners, working together with students to address community needs.”  “Academic Service-Learning courses contribute to a variety of personal, cognitive and social outcomes including enhanced self-awareness, improved critical thinking, and increased understanding of social responsibility, diversity and societal structures.”

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to:
    ●Analyze the value of diverse leadership approaches and the value of working in diverse teams.
  2. ●Critically evaluate an organization’s mission, goals & objectives, and how these impact event planning and venue management.
  3. ●Understand civic engagement and sustainability and how these impact event and venue management.
  4. ●Organize, plan and execute an event from inception to completion.
  5. ●Critically evaluate legal issues, risk management, staffing and customer service as they apply to event and venue management.
  6. ●Define and apply planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of sport and recreation facilities and events.
  7. ●Interpret event and venue planning and management techniques through field observations.
