An introduction to the American legal system and the study of law in the United States. The course will cover numerous topics including: the role of the courts, legislature and administrative agencies in the legal system; major substantive areas of law; legal reasoning, legal writing, and legal research; and appellate advocacy. Students will be exposed to much of the subject matter traditionally taught during the first year of law school as well as some upper-level courses. In addition to acquiring basic legal knowledge and skills, students should gain valuable insight into whether they want to attend law school and enter the legal profession.
