NRS 3300 GERONTOLOGICAL NURSING
This course will explore the essential elements of nursing care in meeting the physiologic, psychological and emotional needs of the elderly. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of normal aging processes, effects of aging on the body, effects of medication in the elderly client population and the role of grief/loss and spirituality. Students will also explore the concepts of family, health-wellness-illness, communication, caring interventions, management of care, safety, quality improvement, informatics/technology and advocacy.

- 1. Implement caring interventions incorporating documented best practices for individuals in diverse family health settings.
- 2. Correlate diagnostic test and procedures across the health-wellness-illness continuum including analysis of the role of medication regimens in the geriatric client and its impact on health-wellness-illness.
- 3. Explore the concepts of grief, loss and spirituality as it relates to the geriatric client.
- 4. Incorporate informatics and technology to formulate evidenced-based clinical judgements and decisions.
- 5. Provide care in regard to policy and regulations, cost effective strategies, and quality improvement processes.
- 6. Analyze the principles of safety when working with this specific client population.
- 7. Recognize the processes of clinical reasoning and applications in nursing practice.
- 8. Provide safe, culturally competent therapeutic care to clients.
