ENGL 3080 Women’s Mythmaking

The myths of Ancient Greece recur throughout our literature because poets, writers, and artists continue to discover new meanings in archetypes; they rejuvenate our cultural images and can redefine who we are as individuals (our personal and spiritual quests), as we live within communities. In this course modern stories and poems are read and analyzed that retell cultural myths from new and unexpected points of view. Readings include writings about mythology and culture by Carl Karenyi, Alicia Ostriker, and others, with a particular focus on gender and identity.
