Spanish Language (Minor)

The Spanish minor is designed to be international, intercultural and interdisciplinary, enabling students to develop advanced Spanish skills in speaking, reading and writing while acquiring a solid background in the complex history, literature, cultures, and intellectual traditions of Spain, Latin America, and the Latino US, as well as develop speaking skills in their field of expertise.

The Spanish Minor is especially helpful for students preparing for professions in business, counseling, education, government, health sciences and medicine, pre-law, law enforcement and so on.

Study abroad will be offered in conjunction with the program. The minor consists of 16 units, of which 12 will be upper division courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing a Spanish minor will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Understand both spoken and written modern Spanish across a range of registers and in a variety of contexts.
2. Speak Spanish with a high level of accuracy.
3. Write essays articulately and convincingly in Spanish.
4. Understand and apply theoretical and critical approaches to various aspects of Hispanic culture.

Requirements

Lower Division

SPAN 2111	Intermediate Spanish for Health Professions	4.00 units
	or
SPAN 2113	Intermediate Spanish for Business	4.00 units

Upper Division

SPAN 3201	Advanced Composition and Conversation	4.00 units
SPAN 3203	Survey of Spain and Latin America	4.00 units

Student selects either SPAN 3204: Spanish Immersion or from the courses required for the Latin American Studies minor.
