The Del Mar College Regional Police Academy offers an intensive, multi-semester certificate program for individuals aiming to be licensed as a Peace Officer for the state of Texas and pursue a career in Law Enforcement. The program is approximately 23 weeks with course work designed to challenge students in competencies required for basic peace officer licensing. Upon successful completion of the academy, the student may be eligible to take the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer Licensing Exam.
The Academy also offers an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Police Science degree. This degree includes course curriculum in criminal justice and law enforcement. In addition, the student planning a career in law enforcement will have the opportunity to take continuing education courses in law enforcement including courses required for the intermediate and advanced certification. The student planning to continue at a senior college should consult an advisor concerning degree requirements of the college to which transfer is intended.
Applying to the Academy
A student should apply and meet the minimum requirements for Peace Officer as per Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) guidelines. Demonstrating physical fitness standards may also be required to qualify. Twice per academic year, the Police Academy opens a two-month application period for individuals who might be interested in the program. For current information on dates, procedures, and requirements to apply, students should contact the Academy and/or check the Law Enforcement Program website.
