Health Services

As a non-residential college, Columbus Technical College expects students to secure normal medical services through a family physician; however, in the event of serious injury or other medical emergencies, the nearest instructor or staff member will notify, if appropriate, 911 and the Security Office. The administration will secure professional emergency care, if needed. The College refers serious accidents or illnesses to the nearest hospital of the student’s choice for emergency care and notifies the student’s identified emergency contacts. Students understand that they and their families, not the College, are responsible for the cost of such emergency care, including any necessary ambulance service.

Accidents

In the event of an injury or illness, a person should follow these reporting procedures:

1. Report injuries or illness to the instructor or supervisor, immediately get first-aid treatment for all injuries occurring on campus.
2. When reporting a serious injury or illness, you should
   1. dial (9) 911;
   2. give your name;
   3. tell where the injured or ill person is located: Columbus Technical College, 928 Manchester Expressway.CAUTION : Anyone rendering assistance to an injured person on campus MUST follow the necessary precautions outlined in the Exposure Control Plan to protect against exposure to blood and airborne pathogens.

Emergency First-Aid Plan

1. DO NOT MOVE THE PATIENT.
2. Minor First-Aid Treatment
1. Assess the situation; if no apparent medical attention is needed, give minor first aid.
2. As a precaution, have a physician check an injury.
3. Injury or Sudden Illness
1. In case of injury or sudden illness, call or have another person call for an ambulance (DIAL (9) 911) and Campus Security (DIAL 1933) and give the following information:     
• Injured or ill person is located at Columbus Technical College, 928 Manchester Expressway.
• Name and phone number of person placing call.
2. Notify Campus Security.
3. Obtain employee’s or student’s hospital and physician preferences. While help is being summoned, give immediate attention to the following first-aid priorities
4. Do not leave the individual alone.
5. Ensure that the victim has an open airway, and give mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose artificial respiration, if necessary.
6. Control severe bleeding by applying pressure.
7. Loosen constricting clothing.
8. Protect the victim from unnecessary manipulation and disturbance.
9. Avoid or overcome chilling by using blankets or covers, if available. If the victim is exposed to cold or dampness, place blankets or additional clothing over and under him or her.
10. Determine the injuries or cause for sudden illness. After immediate problems are under control,
1. Find out exactly what happened. Information may be obtained from the victim or from persons who saw the accident or saw the individual collapse in the case of sudden illness;
2. look for an emergency medical identification, such as a card or bracelet, that may provide a clue to the victim’s condition; if the victim is unconscious and has no sign of external injury and if the above methods fail to provide identity, try to obtain proper identification either from papers carried in the billfold or purse or from bystanders so that relatives can be notified (Have a witness when searching for identification.); above all, as a first-aid person, you should know the limits of your capabilities and must make every effort to avoid injury to the victim in your attempt to provide the best possible emergency first-aid care.

Preventive Health Care

The health and wellness of students and employees is a primary concern of Columbus Technical College. The goal of the College is to assist and direct each individual toward developing a healthy and productive lifestyle. Wellness resources are available in the Library and in Counseling and Assessment Services.
