Program Description: The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s dental offices or clinics. The program provides learning opportunities that introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Curriculum areas of emphasis include general dentistry which consist of restorative procedures, dental specialties such as oral surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, and pedodontics and the expanded duties required for each area of dentistry.
Graduates are competent in the technical areas of preventive dentistry, chairside assisting with an emphasis on four-handed dentistry techniques, infection control procedures, dental radiology, dental practice management, and dental laboratory procedures. Employment Opportunities: Certified dental assistants are in great demand in our service area. Graduates should be able to obtain suitable employment with excellent working conditions in private dental offices, hospital dental clinics, dental schools, public health departments, military and veteran's dental clinics, and prison dental clinics.
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Dental assistants held about 330,200 jobs in 2020. Employment of dental assistants is projected to grow 11 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. Credentialing (Optional): Graduates receive a diploma in dental assisting and are certified in expanded functions for the State of Georgia and are eligible to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board exam.
