COMMEMORATION

"I is a long-memoried woman." "If I die, I'm a legend."  These phrases exhibit a commemorative practice—that is, a call to remembrance or to care. This course attends to how U.S. and Caribbean black writers have sought to commemorate or to document commemoration. We explore the difficulties, dangers, and possibilities of using writing to commemorate. We ask questions such as: What does commemoration involve? For whom do we commemorate? Does commemoration have an ending? Is it an ending? Works from Hurston, Morrison, Nichols, Brathwaite, and Nourbese Phillip.
