Sustainability Studies—Interdisciplinary Concentration
Total credit hours required for concentration: 18
The Sustainability Concentration consists of 18 credit hours, taken from an approved list of courses offered in these UIW colleges/schools: HEB School of Business and Administration, School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering, School of Media and Design, Rosenberg School of Optometry, and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Students must take at least 3 credit hours in three of these five schools. A minimum of 6 credit hours of upper-division electives (3000-4000 level) must be earned, and students must take ENGL 3371 Ecocriticism.
Students will develop a multi- and interdisciplinary understanding of the field of Sustainability Studies, with particular emphasis on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. They will also learn how the decisions we make now will impact local and global environments in the present and future. Through exposure to various perspectives, students will also analyze the complex ways in which environmental requirements, business and growth demands, and social equity intersect to create a sustainable world. In this manner, students will be presented with the tools needed to become enlightened citizens and twenty-first-century leaders in sustainability.
