An examination of how different societies have conceptualized and pursued their political and military objectives. By studying ancient classics such as the Arthashastra and The Art of War, as well as modern works on nuclear deterrence, counterinsurgency, and cyberwarfare, the course compares different viewpoints on the nature of war, the relationship between civil and military authority, and the proper function of alliances. Particular attention is given to non-Western examples such as China, India, and the Islamic world, to explore the impact of diverse strategic cultures on an increasingly globalized and multipolar system.
