AHI 241 LOVE SEX GENDER

An exploration of love in Western art from medieval courtly love, to middle-class conjugal love, to modern “free love.” Students will examine how distinct social groups and historical moments define love as cosmic, spiritual, emotional, physical, conjugal and parental. Students will explore love as ennobling, redeeming, controlling, and debasing, as an arena of civilizing “femininity” and of “masculine” conquest and empire.
