PSIC3891 Cyberpsychology

This elective course will examine the psychological impact of new technologies based on information and the Internet (including computers, tablets, smartphones, and games consoles). The focus will be on the online social behavior of users of services such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and various blogs, discussion forums, and instant-messaging apps. We will also consider the educational uses of new communications technologies.

Topics to be covered include: How our evolved psychology constrains the use of new technology; the nature of online “communities”; differences between online and face-to-face communication; how the Internet changes romantic, friendship and family relations; rumors, gossip, reputation and trust online; flaming, trolling, and cyberbullying; and the effects of the Internet on physical and mental health.
