OMED 8271 Everyday Ethics in Clinical Practice Elective Clerkship

The two-week elective clerkship engages the learners in analyzing, understanding, and reflecting on ethical issues and conflicts that can arise in the everyday course of providing clinical care to patients. Learners will evaluate and discuss clinical scenarios and pertinent literature reviews of four “everyday ethical issues:”  challenges in cross cultural care, saying “no” to patients; apologizing to patients for medical errors and near misses; and professional boundary issues. The presentation, mitigation, and resolution of everyday ethical conflicts require a principle-based and patient-centered methodology, in conjunction with understanding, honesty, professionalism, and value judgments.
