Accreditation and Memberships

Sacred Heart University is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.)

Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the Commission indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer review process.  An accredited college or university is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.  Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation.

In addition, several University programs have received either specialized accreditation or approval by the state of Connecticut or have been granted specialized accreditation by national professional organizations.

The Farrington College of Education is nationally accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the national accrediting body for educator preparation programs.  All educator programs of the college are approved by the State of Connecticut to prepare candidates for educator certifications.

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing, the master’s degree program in nursing, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street, NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791, (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org)

The College of Health Professions has numerous programs individually accredited by professional organizations and is a member of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP). Each year the college completes a report to ASAHP. Additionally, each year these accredited programs must submit an annual report to their respective accrediting bodies to maintain accreditation. The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE  ACOTE® is recognized as the accrediting agency for occupational therapy education by both the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). ACOTE is also an active member of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (ASPA).  At the heart of the continuing accreditation process is a process of self-study. Our program submitted the  Interim Accreditation report based on self-study on April 15th, 2021. The next full accreditation review will be AY26-27. The master’s degree (M.S.) program in Speech-Language Pathology at Sacred Heart University is accredited by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education, and by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800 498 2071 or 301 296 5700. The Speech-Language Pathology program at Sacred Heart is a member of the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Our next accreditation will take place in Feb. 2024.  The Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program is licensed by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education (CTOHE), and the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Continued status to the Sacred Heart University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by the Sacred Heart University. Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation status granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards. Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the Standards. The approximate date for the next validation review of the program by the ARC-PA will be March 2031. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the Accreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy. The Doctor of Physical Therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of PT Education (CAPTE). The next CAPTE accreditation review is in the Spring of 2025.
