English as a Second Language
The English Language Institute at Sacred Heart University offers a CEA-accredited Intensive English Program with five session start dates throughout the academic year: January, March, May, August, and October. Full-time ESL students take 20 hours of Academic English per week; part-time students can take anywhere from 5 to 15 hours. Six levels of proficiency are offered during eight-week sessions, with courses in Grammar, Reading, Listening & Speaking, and Writing. Placement in this non-credit program is determined by a formal English placement test.
Students who successfully complete their ESL classes at the Sacred Heart University’s English Language Institute are not required to take another proficiency test to enroll in other degree programs at the University. Admission to the English Language Institute does not guarantee admission to the University, but it does help upon successful program completion. For more information regarding the program, contact the Institute at esl@sacredheart.edu. Please visit the English Language Institute website for further information.
