English as a Second Language (ESL)

In ESL, students may earn grades of P, MP or F.

P: Satisfactory completion of a course. Student passes to a higher level course.
MP: Measurable progress. Sufficient progress has been made to indicate that the student should be able to complete the requirements of the course within the subsequent semester. The student is required to re-register for the course.
F: Fail. Repetition of the course is necessary.

Students may be dismissed from the College if:

  • They have not completed ESL after four full-time semesters or six part-time semesters.
  • They have not progressed to the next higher course level in ESL after two semesters at the same level.
  • They have not met the requirements for satisfactory academic progress in credit courses at Rockland Community College. Time extensions may be permitted on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the ESL faculty if students are in good standing and are progressing.

Students will be notified in writing if they are dismissed. They will not be permitted to register for classes until they are re-admitted. An appeal for a Waiver of Dismissal may be made in writing to the Coordinator of Academic Interventions, Room 8247, on the second floor of the Technology Center.

A dismissed student is eligible to apply for re-admittance after two semesters have elapsed (not including Winter or Summer sessions). The decision to re-admit is based on an interview with the Coordinator of Academic Intervention and approval of the student’s plan of study by an ESL advisor and final review by the Coordinator of Academic Intervention.

Note: Students are not necessarily required to follow the sequence of classes listed in ESL. End of semester scores will determine the student’s placement in the appropriate level for the next semester.
