14.3 Alumni Awards
Purpose
To provide guidelines for selection of alumni award recipients.
Policy
On an annual basis, recipients are selected for two types of alumni awards.
- One exemplary former student is honored annually as Alumnus (or Alumna) of the Year. The award is based upon exceptional achievement in an occupation or area of service. Financial and/or volunteer involvement with Rochester University is preferable, but not necessary for recipients of this award.
- Outstanding Alumni Awards can be given to any number of alumni each year. They are limited, however, to one recipient per year in any given category (business, Christian service, counseling, community service, etc.) to preserve some uniqueness among the awards. Recipients of these awards should be involved with Rochester University on a financial and/or volunteer basis.
Alumnus of the Year and Outstanding Alumni
Honored at a major university event (Partnership Dinner, Founders Day, etc.). Outstanding Alumni Awards are given at the same time, but are not limited to that setting. On special occasions Outstanding Alumni Awards may be given at minor university events or at an event in the recipient’s hometown.
Recipients of both awards are selected by the following process:
- The director of alumni activities provides a list of nominees to the administrative team. Prior to that time, any individual can make recommendations for nominees to be included on the list.
- The administrative team reviews the list of nominees and, at that first review, adds any nominees they deem appropriate.
- The director of alumni activities reviews further nominations added by the administrative team for unforeseen difficulties.
- The administrative team selects award recipients at a second meeting.
- The director of alumni activities notifies recipients and reinstitutes the selection process if any key recipients decline.
Plaques are prepared for recipients by the director of alumni activities and articles about the awards are included in the North Star and any other appropriate publications.
