HCA103 Introduction to Healthcare Information

This course introduces Healthcare Information and its role in healthcare delivery systems. Topics include medical record standards, regulations and initiatives; payment and reimbursement systems, healthcare providers and disciplines; study of the history of health records, professional ethics, and functions of a health information department, retention of records, medical forms, health information practices, and responsibilities to healthcare administration, medical staff, and other medical professionals. In addition, this course will discuss fraud and abuse, patient privacy and confidentiality, protected health information, and release of information. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of health information management, healthcare organizations, and professions and trends in the healthcare industry.
