POLS 210 Interest Group Politics

When we paint a picture in our minds about what American politics looks like, we often think in terms of groups rather than individuals. This is no coincidence– the relevance of an issue, interest, or perspective in any democracy is a function of numbers. And bigger is better.

But how, and why? And when, for that matter? 

How do groups seek to influence American policymakers, and why do policymakers listen? When do policymakers ignore groups, even when they’re big? How do groups form, gain power and momentum, and seek to influence politics and policy? Are interest groups good or bad for American democracy and representation?

This course will explore interest group politics in the US through the lens of institutions, Madisonian ideals, and the logic of political action. It will apply new understandings of interest group activity and impact to contentious political issues such as gun control, abortion, civil rights, environmental policy, and income inequality. It will do so at the federal, state, and even local level of political institutions and policymaking.
