MUSC 270 Music Podcasting
Music has been linked to the podcasting movement since the latter’s emergence in the early 2000s, with early podcasts—or “audioblogs”—dedicated to publishing playlists of favorite music tracks. Though podcasting has grown to encapsulate a wide array of categories and foci, music podcasts have continued to flourish and now specialize in such topics as new music, iconic bands, classic songs, music production, and the music industry among others. Part of podcasting’s resilience is its use of technology to manage free and paid subscriptions and benefit from the diverse voices that contribute to podcasting’s proliferating forms. In this course, we will ideate on podcasts as a popular, user-generated medium that is the latest in a long history of sound objects that circulate and reflect upon popular music. Students will work together to produce a music podcast that is ready for publication through standard podcasting channels. With the course planned for multiple semesters, the podcast can continue for multiple semesters, creating a viable, practice-based platform for the study of music, criticism, and distribution.
