HIST 258 Mexico-U.S. Relations
A complex web of historical ties has fundamentally shaped the political, economic and cultural development of both Mexico and the United States. Our aim will be to understand the roots and development of deep interdependency despite two centuries of relations marked by antagonism, exploitation and unilateralism. We will examine how five key historical episodes in Mexico-U.S. relations, including the U.S.-Mexico War, the Mexican Revolution, the Interwar Years, the Bracero Program, and the Cold War, shaped conflict and cooperation and impacted the everyday lives of Mexican and U.S. citizens. In the last third of the course, we will focus on three contemporary issues - immigration, trade and the environment – to understand how the past has shaped the present.
