HIST 194 Imperialism
The class explores a range of historical experiences of imperialism from the Americas to Central, South and East Asia to the Middle East and Africa. We introduce students to major concepts, theories, and intellectual inquiries in imperialism and postcoloniality. Students will examine the historical emergence of theories and practices of imperialism in order to interrogate notions of human rights, imperial and colonial capitalism and post-coloniality. The class engages with questions concerning knowledge production, representation, and subjectivities produced by the colonial encounter and its historical legacies such as racial capitalism and uneven development. We will necessarily consider the ways that imperialism produces difference as a technique of power.
