CTSJ 103 Justice
This course engages students in critical analysis of classic theories of justice and their connection to more contemporary theories and enactments at the global level. Theoretical explorations will include readings from Pre-1800 theorists on justice and punishment include: Plato, Aristotle, Manu, Al-Farabi, Al-Mawardi, Thucydides, John Lock, Immanuel Kant, Jeanne-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Aquinas, and John Rawls. The course will build on these early theories of justice to explore justice from the Enlightenment through the current moment through themes such as: utilitarianism, deontology, concepts of fairness, libertarianism, and communitarianism. Themes related to social justice will explore gender justice, racial justice, economic justice, and liberatory practices in the context of global capitalism.
