ASN 131 Korean Pop Culture
In this course, we will examine various forms of Korean popular culture. We will examine how Korean popular culture not only reflects, but also influences Korean cultural conceptions of gender, race, sexuality, and class. Each week, we will analyze Korean popular culture through the frameworks provided by relevant academic articles and book chapters. The academic texts we will discuss in class will focus on topics including disability, queer activism, neoliberalism, militarism and masculinity, feminism and anti-feminism, and multiculturalism. The types of popular culture we will examine in class will include films, television programs, and K-pop music videos. All reading materials will be in English and all of the popular culture contents will have subtitles. Therefore, no prior knowledge of Korean language is necessary to take this class.
