Bachelor of Arts Degree
Degree requirements:
Unless modified in individual cases by administrative action, the following requirements must be fulfilled by all students to qualify for formal recommendation by the faculty for the degree of Bachelor of Arts:
- Successful completion of a minimum of 128 units.
- Attainment of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better based on grades for all courses which factor into the Occidental grade point average.
- Attainment of a 2.0 grade point average or better for all courses that comprise each of a student’s major(s) or minor(s).
- Successful completion of the Core Program including the language proficiency requirement. It is expected that all Core Program requirements are completed by the end of the junior year.
- Satisfaction of the writing proficiency requirement. See below.
- Successful completion of all required coursework for a declared major(s) or an Independent Pattern of Study.
- Passing of the comprehensive requirement in a student’s major(s).
- Completion of all coursework, and final grade recorded, in courses for which a student received a course in progress grade, an incomplete grade, or a grade of no record.
A minimum of 64 earned units of the 128 required must be taken by the student at Occidental College to receive the Bachelor of Arts degree. Sixteen of the last 32 units successfully completed for the degree must be taken at Occidental College. Units earned through participation in Occidental-sponsored study abroad programs are considered to be units taken at Occidental College.
The Bachelor of Arts degree is conferred at the May Commencement upon all candidates who have satisfied their final degree requirements at any time since the previous Commencement.
