LLAS 211 Representing Violence in Contemporary Mexico
Cultural production is central to the struggle for human rights. As cultural artifacts both conceptualize and memorialize social-political trauma, our class will take a close look at the way that Mexican film, literature and music represents both criminal and state violence. For comparative purposes, we will also look at some documentaries or film about the current violent situation in Central America. As this is a 2-unit course, you should expect to spend at least six (6) hours a week (including in-class time) on this course.
Learning outcome(s): Students will learn about the contemporary humanitarian crisis in Mexico (as well as Central America) through a critical analysis of cultural artifacts.
