SPAN 379 History and Fiction in Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez
In One Hundred Years of Solitude, Of Love and Other Demons and The General in His Labyrinth, the Nobel-Prize winning Colombian author contextualizes Latin American, Colombian, and Caribbean history in differing ways. The course will discuss the allegorical, satirical, and realist uses of history in those three novels by García Márquez, with particular attention to the presentation of colonialism, nineteenth-century independence movements, slavery, and race relations.
