SPAN 303 Introduction to Modern Latin American Literature and Culture
An introduction to major twentieth-century works of literary fiction and cinema in Latin America, with attention to the interplay of fiction and history, read in the original Spanish: Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits, and stories by Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar and Roberto Bolaño. Film screenings include Cuban director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea's Memories of Underdevelopment, Chilean director Patricio Guzmán's Salvador Allende, and Argentine director Lucrecia Martel's La ciénaga.
