CSP 53 Educational Narratives and Student Identity Formation: Exploring Research and Theories of Learning
This seminar is designed to explore how teaching and learning has been framed not only in popular culture, but also in U.S. educational policy and teaching best practices. We will begin the class reading educational narratives in genres such as memoir, essay, novel, and case study. Some authors we will read include Mike Rose, bell hooks, and Richard Rodriguez. To expand our understanding on how students learn and how one's identity informs learning, will read educational research and theories of student learning and identity. Some questions our class will explore include: What are popular narratives of teaching and learning in the U.S.? How have these narratives shaped students' and their identity? As we explore these questions, students will be guided through the reading, research, and writing process. By the end of the semester, students will have gained a stronger understanding of the research and writing process. Students who seek to learn more about their own learning experiences or are thinking of pursuing teaching may find this course of particular interest.
