HIST 385 Identity Formation in the Modern Middle East and Africa

This course explores histories of the Middle East and North Africa over the last century and a half through an examination of identity formation. In the simplest terms, this means we will study the ways that people in the region came to understand themselves and their place in the world. Specifically, we will consider the intersections of religion, nationalism, colonialism, economic and "minority" status, and gender/sexuality in the emergent nation-states of the region.
