IDS102G Attraction and Avoidance: Disability in Popular Culture
In this course, we will explore the history of Disability Studies, the wide range of theory/theories within Disability Studies, and the cultural impact of disability representation on US society. Taking into account that "representation structures reality," we will read foundational Disability Studies texts alongside disability representations in film, fiction, and the media. With the fiction of the normative body always in mind, students will learn to be better communicators and interpreters of how disability is used in the texts that surround them. Fulfills open, liberal arts, humanities, social science, and IDS elective.
