PHL.2026 Ethics

This course is survey to the study of Western ethics. Throughout history, many philosophers and thinkers have provided different ways of answering questions of good and evil and how we determine what is moral, and their ideas have influenced how we live our lives. We will examine a diverse range of ethical theories within Western thought, some of which draw on the three main branches of ethics (virtue ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology). We will then look at responses and reactions to these theories, some of which point out the problems or concerns that arise from these theories. All these figures will show us the challenges of considering what counts as moral and how we might best live ethically in light of difficult situations and dilemma.
