HIS.2084 History of Mexico
Many think of Mexico only through the lens of tourism and immigration while failing to understand the complexities and richness of Mexico's history, culture, social and economic relationships and political struggles. This course therefore will expand students' knowledge of Mexico while dispelling myths circulated in media outlets. We will explore how regional identities, gender relations, and political and economic struggles informed Mexico's path to independence and subsequent state formation and modernization up until the present day. This includes but is not limited to an analysis of the conflict between liberals and conservatives, peasant struggles over land and sovereignty, modernization, authoritarian rule and struggles for democratization, the Mexican Revolution, relations with the United States, women's movements, populism, the post-revolutionary state, the rise and decline of the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI), and recent violence and inequality that has spurred continued immigration to the United States.
