EDPD.5035 Culturally Responsive Classroom Management

Culturally Responsive Classroom Management is designed to help educators maintain caring, respectful classroom communities in which ALL learners feel safe and respected. When teachers create these environments, their learners can be rigorously challenged and engaged in the learning process. In particular, this course addresses the special challenges of creating community in the increasing diverse classrooms in public schools. Major theories will be examined along with an analysis of the impact of school and student culture on classroom learning and interactions. The organization of the classroom environment will be organized with a focus on how the environment meets the needs of diverse learners. School interventions discussed will include School-wide and Class-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Methods and techniques of effective classroom management will be explored through readings, movies, presentations and small group work. We will consider what it means to be "culturally responsive" in order to establish lifelong learners that will succeed academically and grow socially.
