MUA 4071 Cabaret Performance Workshop

Focus of this performance class is the successful solo communication of song to an intimate audience. Each student will perform a short cabaret set, five to seven minutes in length, consisting of two solo songs and a connective spoken monologue ("patter"). One of these two songs must be by the semester's featured songwriter. Students will also perform two ensemble songs. Communication and interpretive skills will be developed. Songs will be analyzed for text, music, and interpretation, with an eye toward understanding historical and societal context. Class structure is similar to an acting class, with all students observing when not performing. The course culminates in one performance evening, open to the general public as well as the Manhattanville community.
