PHL 2001 CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ETHICS

This course will examine a number of current ethical debates. Topics will include issues with end of life care, cloning and reproductive technologies, war, terrorism, race, gender, world hunger, and the environment. The course will begin with an overview of the major theories of moral normativity: egoism, utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and natural law. Students will be expected to analyze course topics in light of these theories, as well as their own critical evaluations of the authors considered throughout the semester. Ultimately the goal is for students to develop their own philosophically coherent positions on the important ethical issues of the day.
