HIS 1015 Survey of Modern Latin America

Nineteenth and twentieth century Latin America were periods of intense political, social, and economic transformation. This introductory course will cover many of the principle themes that contributed to these changes, including the dissolution of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, the emeregence of the independent republics, the problems of state formation, integration into the world economy, the struggle for democracy, and the changing patterns of gender, ethnic and racial relationships. The course surveys the factors common to the modern histories of Latin American nations as well as significant cultural and political differences between them.
