PA 5813 HEALTH INFORMATICS AND CLINICAL DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS

This course introduces students to the field of health informatics with particular emphasis on evaluating the effectiveness of technology interfaces between health care practitioners and patients. The course presents the knowledge, infrastructure, functions and tools of health informatics while exploring applications in both public health and private healthcare systems.  The electronic medical record, electronic health record, personal health record, clinical decision support systems, telemedicine, health literacy and mobile health (m-health) will be explored in detail. The structure of this class is designed so that students are placed in the role of a member of a health informatics team, becoming proficient in the application of the processes of health information technology.  As part of the team, students will identify a healthcare process that can be improved through the use of one of the technologies addressed in the course. The primary purpose of the team project is to describe the impact of the process improvement using health information technology on the larger healthcare system, regional, national, and if possible global.
