STME 2099 MATHEMATICAL & COMPUTATIONAL METHODS OF SCIENCE I LAB

This is a first semester laboratory course, complementing STME 2000. Laboratory experiments correspond directly with concepts learned simultaneously in the lecture portion of the course. The course includes an introduction to MATLAB programming, data structures and algorithms for scientific modeling, especially those models used in STME 2000. Laboratory activities include data fitting in Excel, root-finding methods such as bisection method and Newton's method; finite difference methods for numerical differentiation; numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations including Euler's method, the midpoint method, and 4th order Runge Kutta. In addition to learning programming methods, they will also learn standard numerical tools such as VenSim and MATLAB's ODE45.
