Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Science degree and qualify to take the Board of Certification (BOC) Examination. Under the governance of the State Board of Medical Examiners, those New Jersey residents who pass the BOC Exam qualify to be licensed and work as athletic trainers in New Jersey.

Program Accreditation:
The Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Admissions Requirements:
A 3.0 G.P.A. is required for admission into, continuation in, and graduation from the program. All program courses require an 80% (B-) or better for admission into, continuation in, and graduation from the program. For other requirements, refer to the Athletic Training Majors Handbook.

Start terms:

The freshmen students in the Athletic Training Program at Kean are intended, majors. Freshmen are invited to attend a weekly freshman Athletic Training workshop in the fall semester. This workshop gives the freshman an idea of what will be expected of them once they are accepted into the program, but will also give them an idea of the job of an Athletic Trainer is all about. This workshop will also help them with their spring semester advisement. They begin their Athletic Training core coursework in their spring semester.

Declaration Requirements:
Declared students for BS in Athletic Training must complete the following criteria:

  • Completed program application

  • Two recommendation letters

  • Physical along with bloodwork

  • Completed observational hours

  • Faculty interview

  • Completed preceptor evaluation

  • Maintained a B- or higher in all Athletic Training Core curriculum courses

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0

  • Passed the written and oral practical at the end of their spring semester in the sophomore year. 

Graduation Requirements:

  • Students must have a 3.0 GPA

  • Complete all Athletic Training Core curriculum courses with a B- or higher

  • Complete clinical experiences 

  • Meet qualifications to sit for BOC certification exam

Program Description:
Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers are responsible for the prevention and care of the physically active injuries and illnesses. The BS Degree in Athletic Training Program is a comprehensive educational experience consisting of a strong academic schedule with an intense clinical education.
