SW 6801 TRAUMA FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE
This is an advanced MSW elective clinical practice course that will develop students' professional practice behaviors in trauma, grief, loss, and survival with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. This course concentrates on the etiology and treatment of traumatic symptomatology and will explore conditions that contribute to the intergenerational, sociocultural, and societal
impact of trauma. The course will orient students to the assessment of traumatic symptoms, as well
as to some generally applicable treatment approaches, and to explore research related to the
psychobiology of trauma. Students will be expected to demonstrate evidence-based knowledge
and skills for identifying and assessing survivors of domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, school violence, gangs, victims of natural disasters, violent crimes, human rights violations, combat veterans, and terrorism.
Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of the values and ethical dilemmas inherent in working with trauma survivors in such areas of immigration, refugees, and human trafficking. Finally, students will have the opportunity to develop a self-care plan to develop a self-care plan in the development of their professional use of self.
