SW 5601 SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH I
This course introduces students to ssocial work research. It focuses the scientific method of the research process: from the development of a formulating a research question; conducting a literature review; generating a hypothesis; variable identification, conceptualization and operationalization of variables; developing researchable hypothesis. This course focuses on a basic introduction to methodology: identifying and selecting a research design (experimental, quasi-experimental, and pre-experimental), sampling; data collection, coding and data analysis; selecting research tools measurements (questionnaire construction, in-depth interviews) and dissemination of results in a written research proposal. In utilizing scientific social work research in writing the research proposal, the students learn how to social problems that relate to the social work values, ethical and political issues, diversity, discrimination and oppression and strategies that advance the promotion of human rights and social and economic justice and apply them to social work policy, practice and future research. Students are expected to participate in several excerises that will provvide them "hands-on" experience in conducting essential research activities. Each topic is addressed through readings, lecture material. This practical application is usually related to the research proposal.
